THE PREPARATION
PRAYER
A hymn may be sung during the procession
The presbyter says, while the congregation is standing:
Let us pray:
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN
OR
O God, light of the hearts that see you, life of the souls that love you, strength of the thoughts that seek you: to turn from you is to fall, to turn to you is to rise, to abide in you is to stand fast forever. Although we are unworthy to approach you, or to ask anything at all of you, grant us your grace and blessing for the sake of Jesus Christ our Redeemer. AMEN
Then all sing or say:
Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. AMEN
OUR LORD’S SUMMARY OF THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS
Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one; and you should love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the great and first commandment. And the second one is: You should love your neighbour as yourself. There is no other command- ment greater than these. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.
Mark 12 and Matthew 22
Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.
CONFESSION
Then the presbyter says:
Brothers and sisters, we have come together to hear God’s most holy Word, and to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord. Let us therefore kneel and examine ourselves in silence, seeking God’s grace that we may draw near to him with repentance and faith.
All kneel. After a short silence the presbyter continues:
You who truly and earnestly repent of your sins, and are in love and peace with your neighbour, and intend to live a new life, following the commandments of God and by walking from now on in his holy ways, make your humble confession to the compassionate God, that you may be reconciled anew to him through our Lord Jesus Christ.
The deacon leading, all say together:
Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you and our neighbour. We have walked in darkness rather than in light; we have named the name of Christ, but have not departed from iniquity. Have mercy upon us, we ask you; for the sake of Jesus Christ forgive us all our sins; cleanse us by your Holy Spirit; quicken our consciences; and enable us to forgive others; that we may hereafter serve you in newness of life, to the glory of your holy name. AMEN
OR
O God of mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. AMEN
Then the presbyter stands and says: (a selection from the following)
Hear the gracious Word of God to all who truly turn to him through Jesus Christ:
Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be like snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. Isaiah 1:18
Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.
Mathew 11:28
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
John 3:16
The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.
1 Timothy 1:15
If anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous; and he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
After a short silence, the presbyter says:
1 John 2:1-2
Almighty God, our merciful Saviour, who of his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all who forgive their brothers and sisters and with heartfelt repentance and true faith turn to him: have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strength- en you in all goodness; and bring you to eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen, thanks be to God.

THE SERMON
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
The Nicene Creed
We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. AMEN
The congregation may be seated.
The announcements may be made here. A hymn may be sung and an appropriate prayer remembering those who have celebrated birthdays, marriage anniversaries and other happy occasions may be said.

Give your light, O God of love.
Eternal God, remove the blindness of the nations and peoples so that they may walk in the light of love; remove the ignorance and stubbornness of nations and peoples so that they may drink from the fountain of your goodness. AMEN
After the Litany the presbyter says:
Let us pray
Almighty God, the Fountain of all wisdom, who knows our necessities before we ask, and our ignorance in asking: we ask you to have compassion upon our infirmities; and those things, which for our
unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask, vouchsafe to give us, for the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ, our Lord. AMEN

Now I will offer in his sanctuary, sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the Lord.
Psalm 27:6
A hymn is sung and the Bread and Wine for the communion, together with the OFFERTORY, are brought forward and placed on the table. Those who bear offertory stand before the altar during the following prayer. All standing the presbyter says.
Holy God, who through your dear Son has consecrated for us a new and living way to your throne of grace, we come to you through him, unworthy as we are, and we humbly ask you to accept and use us and these our gifts for your glory. All that is in heaven and earth is yours, and of your own we give to you. AMEN
The bearers of the offertory return to their places.
The presbyter and the congregation kneel, and say together:
Be present, be present, 0 Jesus you good High Priest, as you were in the midst of your disciples; and make yourself known to us in the breaking of the bread, who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God world without end. AMEN
The presbyter stands.
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING
(The presbyter may use A or B for Great Thanksgiving)
A
The Lord be with you:
And with your spirit.
Lift up your hearts:
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to our Lord God:
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
It is indeed right, our duty, and highest joy, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to you, O Lord, holy, almighty and everlasting God;**through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, through whom you created the heavens and the earth and all that is in them, and made humankind in your own image, and when it had fallen into sin you redeemed it to be the first fruits
of a new creation.
Therefore, with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you, and saying:
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Glory be to you, O Lord most high. Blessed is He that has come and is to come in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest.
Truly holy and truly blessed are you, O God our saviour, who of your tender love towards humankind gave your only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and instituted and in his holy Gospel commanded us to continue a perpetual memory of his precious death, until he comes again: who, in the same night when he was betrayed, took bread, and after having given thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:”Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me’’.
Likewise, after supper he took the cup, and after he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying: “Drink this all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’’
Amen. Your death O Lord we commemorate, your resurrection we confess, and your second coming we await. Glory be to you, O Christ.
Therefore, O Lord our God, remembering the precious death and passion, and glorious resurrection and ascension, of your Son our Lord, we your servants do this in remembrance of Him as He had commanded, until His coming again, giving thanks to you for the perfect redemption which you have brought about for us in him.
We give thanks to you, we praise you, we glorify you, O Lord our God.
And we most humbly ask you, O merciful Father, to sanctify with your Holy Spirit, us and these your own gifts of bread and wine, that the bread which we break may be the communion of the body of Christ, and the cup which we bless the communion of the blood of Christ. Grant that by being joined together in him, we may all attain to the unity of the faith, and may grow up in all things, unto him who is the Head, through Christ, our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, O God almighty, world without end. Amen.
B
The Lord be with you:
And with your spirit.
Lift up your hearts:
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to our Lord God:
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
O God, Redeemer of fallen creation, at the last meal that your Son, Jesus Christ, shared with his disciples before his death, he took bread in his hands of compassion, gave you praise and thanks, and broke bread. Then he said, “Take, eat: this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me’’.
We celebrate through this bread, the self-offering of our Saviour Christ.
Then after the meal he took the cup, offered praise and thanks to you, gave the cup to his disciples and said: ‘‘Drink this, all of you: This is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me’’.
We celebrate through this cup the new covenant of our Saviour Christ.
As this bread is broken and this wine poured out, O Seeker and Saviour of the lost, we remember again the poor and oppressed of the earth. We recall that your body was broken that the hungry might be nourished,
and the oppressed set free, replenished with the bread of new hope and new life.
Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come in glory.
As this bread was once scattered seed, 0 Bread of life sown in the earth to die and rise to new life: so gather all peoples together in one humanity of your coming reign. Restore the broken life of your creation; heal the disfigured body of your world; draw all creatures unto yourself through the cross and in the power of your risen life. And grant to all the faithful departed, a share in your bliss, that with them we too at the end may be welcomed into your eternal kingdom through your inexhaustible grace, and through the guidance of your indwelling Spirit.
Sanctify us, sanctify this bread, sanctify this wine, so that together we may be the body of Christ. AMEN
Here the presbyter may kneel
As our Saviour Christ has taught us, so we pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, For ever and ever. AMEN.
A moment’s silence is kept, all kneeling. The prayer of humble access may be said:
We do not presume to come to this your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs from under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies and souls may be made clean by his most precious body and blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. AMEN
THE SHARING
As the bread is lifted up and broken, prior to the congregation’s coming forward to share together in it, the following sentences may be said.
When we break the bread, do we not share in the body of Christ?
We seek to share your life, gracious God.
As the cup is lifted up:
When we lift the cup, do we not share in the life-blood of Christ?
We seek to share your life, gracious God.
During this time these words may be said or sung:
O Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us
O Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us
O Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us your peace.
The ministers and the congregation receive the bread and the wine. The following words of administration may be used:
The body of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Bread of life.
The blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, the true Vine
[If the bread or wine set apart be insufficient, the presbyter taking more, may say:
Obeying the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, we take this bread (wine) to be set apart for this holy use, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen]
THANKSGIVING
When all have partaken, the minister says:
Having now by faith received the sacrament of the Body and the Blood of Christ, let us give thanks:
O gracious God, you have fed us with the spiritual food of the most precious body and blood of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. You have assured us, in these holy mysteries, of your favour and goodness towards us, that
we are living members of the body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. For these great benefits we thank you, and in union with your Son we offer you, ourselves as a living sacrifice. And now, Lord, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. AMEN
OR
Glorious God, you have made us one with all your people in heaven and on earth. You have fed us with the bread of life, and renewed us for your service. Help us who have shared Christ’s body and received his cup, to be his faithful disciples so that our daily living may be part of the life of your kingdom, and our love be your love reaching out into the life of the world. AMEN
Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God, for ever and ever. AMEN
The presbyter gives the SECOND BENEDICTION:
Go out into the world in peace; have courage; hold onto what is good; return no one evil for evil; strengthen the faint-hearted; support the weak, and help the suffering; honour all people; love and serve the Lord, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit and may the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be amongst you and remain with you always. AMEN
OR
The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. AMEN
Closing Hymn & Recession
A hymn may be sung and the ministers go out carrying with them the Bible and the offering of the people.
The Minister then says a PRAYER; people standing. Then says:

Almighty and most merciful God; we have erred, and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws. We have left undone those things, which we should have done; and we have done those things, which we should not have done; and there is no health in us. But you, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare them O God, who confess their faults. Restore them that are penitent; according to your promises declared to humankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, 0 most merciful God, for his sake; that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous and just life, to the glory of your holy name. AMEN

The the Minister shall read the Invitatory and Confession of Sins:
(A. To be used from the First Sunday in Advent to Epiphany)
You who are sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be saints, come, let us worship and bow down ; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, through whose tender mercy the day-spring from on high has visited us; to give light to them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: and to guide our feet into the way of peace. In His love He has chosen us as His own in Christ before the creation of the world, that we should be holy and without blemish in His presence. Faithful is He that has called us into the fellowship of His Son Jesus Christ, our Lord. Remembering, however, that we have sinned and are unworthy to stand in God’s holy presence, let us with true penitence confess our sins, saying:
AMEN
(B. To be used from the first Sunday after Epiphany to Easter.)
You who are sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be saints, let us adore and worship our God most holy and blessed, in everlasting remembrance of the gift of His only begotten Son for our salvation. Let us praise and honour Jesus Christ, our good Lord of inestimable love Who, by His abundant grace, died for us, and was buried, but was raised in glory by the power of God. As such who live by His death, let us thank and serve Him during this hour of worship, and on all the days of our life. Remembering, however, that we have sinned and are unworthy to stand in God’s holy presence, let us with true penitence confess our sins, saying:
O GOD, Father eternal and almighty, we acknowledge and confess before Your holy majesty that we are but poor sinners, inclined to evil and unable to do good of ourselves. We transgress Your Holy law every day in various ways and thus bring down upon us Your righteous judgments. But, O Lord, we regret and deplore having offended You, and we condemn ourselves and our sins with true repentance. Taking Your mercy as our only plea we ask you to have pity on us. O God of all goodness and Father of mercies, redeem us from our misery, and cleanse us from all stain for the sake of the One Who is holy, through your Son Jesus Christ, our Saviour. AMEN.
(C. To be used from the Sunday after Easter to Trinity.)
You who are called in Christ Jesus to be children of God and heirs of life eternal, enter into the presence of God who will enlighten the eyes of your understanding, that you may know what the hope of His calling is and what the riches
of His inheritance are. May the Triune God, the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit of Whom and through Whom, and unto Whom are all things, grant you grace to serve Him without fear in holiness and righteousness all the days of your life. Remembering, however, that we have sinned and are unworthy to stand in God’s holy presence, let us with true penitence confess our sins, saying:
O GOD, our heavenly Father, we confess before You that we have grievously sinned against You in many ways; not only by outward transgressions, but also by secret thoughts and desires. We do sincerely repent, and are truly sorry for these our offences. And we ask you of your great goodness, to have mercy upon us; and for the sake of Your dear Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, to forgive our sins and graciously help our infirmities. Restore us to the fellowship of Your love and strengthen us to do what is well pleasing before You. AMEN.
(D. To be used from the Sunday after Trinity to the last Sunday in Trinity.)
You who are sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be saints, lift up your hearts and make your prayers and supplications known unto God with reverence and holy fear. Surely this is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven. Here He is pleased to grant to us comfort, and joy and the peace that passeth all understanding. Here we hear Him speak to us in His Word and sacraments. It is meet and right therefore that we should come near unto Him who has drawn near unto us, and offer to Him the sacrifice of our praise and thanksgiving. Remembering, however, that we have sinned and are unworthy to stand in
God’s holy presence, let us with true penitence confess our sins, saying:
OUR heavenly Father, we, miserable sinners, confess before You that we have trespassed against Your holy laws often and in many ways by evil thoughts, words, and deeds; by unbelief, ingratitude and deceit and by not loving the brethren as we ought to have done. We have become worthy of Your judgments and even of eternal death. We do earnestly repent and are sorry for these our sins. We see no other way of redemption and consolation than that which comes through Your grace which exceeds our guilt, through the precious redemption wrought by our Lord Jesus Christ. We therefore ask you to freely forgive all our sins, restore us to Your fellowship, and sanctify us by Your holy Spirit to serve You in newness of life and in gratitude. AMEN.
Then the minister shall stand up and, facing the congregation, pronounce the following ABSOLUTION.
All of you who truly repent and are sorry for your sins and truly believe in Christ our Redemer, with full purpose of amendment of heart and life, hear the comfortable assurance, from the holy gospel, of the remission of sin. Almightly God has mercy upon us, and is pardoning all our sins through His well beloved Son, Jesus Christ, who was crucified for our sins, and raised from the dead for our righteousness. Thus by the power and commandment given by Jesus Christ to His Church, I declare and pronounce to you, the remission of your sins in the name of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. At the same time I warn the impenitent and unbelieving, in the name and by the commandment of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Chirst, that their sins are retained, and that unless they turn and
repent the wrath of God abides upon them. AMEN. OR
All of you who have repented of your sins and are seeking the grace of God and remission of sins, hear the comfort- able message of the gospel. The Lord Himself says unto you:
Whoever comes to me I will never cast out.
Your sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
Though you sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
I will give you a new heart. I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my commandments, and you will keep my judgements, and do them. (M)
But to those who are not repenting, God’s Word says:
See that you refuse him not that speaks. For if they, escaped not who refused, him that spoke on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaks from heaven.
As I live, declares the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but rather that they turn from their ways and live. AMEN.
Then shall follow the PRAYER OF ADORATION.
Let us all stand and offer thanks to Almighty God:
Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants do give you our most humble and hearty thanks for all your goodness and loving kindness
to us, and to all people. We thank you for our creation, preservation, and for all the blessings of this life; but above all, for your inestimable love in the redemption of the world through our Lord Jesus Christ, for your holy word and sacraments and for the hope of glory through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.
One of the following prayers is to be added here:
We ask you our heavenly Father, to give us such an awareness of your mercies, so that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit be all honour and glory, now and for ever. AMEN.
OR
O Lord, give us purity of lips, clean and innocent hearts, and rectitude of action. Give us humility, patience, self- control, justice, and courage; give us the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of kindness, and godliness, and the fear of You. Grant us to have a contrite and humbled heart in Your presence and to prefer nothing to your love. Have mercy upon us, we humbly ask you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.
OR
O GOD our heavenly Father, let your gracious presence be with us and grant us peace, trustfulness, and courage on our pilgrimage. Give us graće that we hold You fast, with a loving and adoring heart, and grant that our affections
be fixed only on You. Teach us to listen to Your voice and may we never stifle its warnings. Lead us in the right way till we pass into the Land of Promise; through Jesus Christ. AMEN.
(Instead of the Prayer of adoration one of the Psalms of adoration found on pages 30-32 can be read responsively by minister and congregation)
A hymn may be sung before the SCRIPTURE LESSONS are read
The First Lesson
The First lesson is read from the Old Testament
The Second Lesson
The second lesson is read from the New Testament; or two lessons may be read, one from the Epistles or other books and one from the Gospels.
Then shall follow the CREED to be said in unison.
Since God, the Father of mercies, reveals to us in His Word the fulness of His love, and invites us to be partakers of His abundant grace in Christ Jesus, I exhort you to confess your faith in Him, saying after me :
The Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AMEN
The creed shall be followed by the Announcements. An appropri- ate prayer remembering those who have celebrated birthdays, marriage anniversaries and other happy occasions may be said.
Birthday Prayer
O God, our times are in your hands: look with favour, we pray, on your servants who have celebrated their birthdays and marriage anniversaries, during this week. As they begin another year, grant that they may be showered with all blessings, and may grow in health, strength, wisdom and grace. Strengthen their trust in your goodness, and show them that they live under your protection and care all the days of their life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN
The congregation shall join in praise. During singing the OFFERTORY shall be received by the elders of the church. Then the offertory shall be presented by the elders to the minister, who, stands before the
communion table, facing the congregation, shall receive the same and offer, the Prayer Consecrating the Offertory :
